The story

As you stand here in Mariánské náměstí, your eyes are likely drawn upward to the slender, sand-colored spire rising above the sprawling complex of the Klementinum. This is the Astronomical Tower, and for centuries, it was the beating heart of Prague’s daily rhythm. While the city below bustled with horse-drawn carriages and market traders, a small group of dedicated scholars lived up there, caught between the cobblestones and the stars.

Take a moment to look at the very top of the tower. You will see a golden statue of Atlas, hoisting the celestial sphere upon his shoulders. He has watched over the city since 1722, but the tower’s most vital work began a few decades later.

Before modern instruments, the astronomers used a simple but brilliant method to find "true noon." They bored a tiny hole high in the wall, creating a camera obscura effect. As the sun moved across the sky, a bead of light would crawl across the floor until it touched a thin metal wire stretched across the room—the Prague Meridian.

That flash of light on the wire was the signal for the flag to wave. Today, as you look at the weathered stone and the narrow windows, imagine the silence of those observers, perched high above the red-tiled roofs, documenting the breath of the city and the passage of the sun.
