Your eyes will immediately be drawn to the center of the room, where the iconic crimson staircase winds upward like a living thing. This forked staircase is a masterpiece of design, with its fluid, organic curves and bold red steps. Though it looks like heavy, hand-carved wood, here is a little secret for you: it is actually reinforced concrete, masterfully painted to mimic the texture of timber.
It was a groundbreaking feat of engineering at the turn of the century. As you ascend the stairs, look toward the ceiling. High above you is a magnificent stained-glass skylight, eight meters long and three meters wide.
In the center of the glass, you’ll see the monogram of the Lello brothers, José and António, surrounding their golden rule: Decus in Labore. In Latin, this means "Dignity in Work." This motto has guided the bookstore through over a century of history, surviving revolutions and the digital age.
Wander through the aisles and notice the intricate carvings on the bookshelves.
