In short: Built in the mid-first century BCE, it was the world’s first meteorological station and a sophisticated timekeeping device. The tower used a wind vane, vertical sundials, and an internal water clock to track the winds and the passing hours.

In short: During the second century, this complex served as an intellectual center holding over twenty thousand scrolls. After the 267 Herulian invasion left it in ruins, the site was repurposed into Byzantine churches and later used as a barracks.

In short: Built in the late 12th century, this church is constructed almost entirely of recycled ancient marble stones called spolia. Its walls feature a collage of carvings including zodiac signs, ancient Greek festival calendars, and mythological creatures alongside Byzantine crosses.
