In short: King Christian IV built a ramp so horses could haul heavy equipment to the library and observatory. This functionality was famously tested in 1716 when Tsar Peter the Great rode his horse all the way to the top.

In short: The monument commemorates more than 1,600 Danish sailors who died during the Second World War. Most served in the Allied merchant navies, delivering vital supplies across the Atlantic while their homeland was occupied by Nazi Germany.

In short: Swedish prisoners of war dug the Nyhavn canal by hand between 1671 and 1673. King Christian V ordered the project to bring the sea to the heart of the city so merchants could offload spices, salt, and wine.

In short: Construction was abandoned in 1770 because the budget for expensive Norwegian marble spiraled out of control. The project remained a ruin for 124 years until financier C.F. Tietgen purchased and completed it in 1894 using Danish limestone.

In short: After sinking in 1990 and being raised, the Sælen became the first Danish submarine to go to war during the 2003 Persian Gulf conflict. It is now a museum at Holmen in Copenhagen harbor.
