The story
Take a moment to look down the length of Via Panisperna. It is one of the most enchanting streets in Rome’s oldest neighborhood, Monti. With its steep incline, its cascading ivy, and its golden-hued buildings, it feels like the quintessential postcard of a slower, more traditional Italy.
But as you stand here, you are actually walking through the epicenter of a scientific earthquake that changed the course of human history. The name Panisperna itself sounds humble. Local legend suggests it comes from the Latin words panis et perna, or bread and ham, which were once distributed to the poor by the monks of the nearby Church of San Lorenzo.
Yet, in the 1930s, this street became synonymous not with food, but with a group of brilliant, boisterous young men known as the Via Panisperna Boys. Led by the legendary Enrico Fermi, this group of physics prodigies worked in a laboratory just a short walk up the street at number 89a, in what was then the Institute of Physics. They were mostly in their twenties, fueled by espresso and an insatiable curiosity.
While the rest of Rome was preoccupied with the posturing of the fascist era, these young men were looking into the very heart of matter. The breakthrough happened in 1934. In a story that sounds more like a backyard experiment than Nobel Prize-winning science, the boys were testing how neutrons behaved when they passed through different materials.
They discovered that if they slowed these neutrons down, the particles were much more likely to be captured by the nucleus of an atom. To test this theory, they famously used the water in a decorative goldfish fountain in the institute’s garden, discovering that the hydrogen in the water acted as the perfect brake. This discovery of slow neutrons was the key that unlocked the door to nuclear fission.
In essence, the atomic age was born right here, between these quiet walls and cobblestones. As you continue your walk, notice the contrast between the world-shaking science and the bohemian charm of Monti. The lab is no longer accessible—it is now part of the Ministry of the Interior—but the spirit of those afternoons remains.
The Via Panisperna Boys eventually scattered as the dark clouds of World War II and anti-Semitic laws gathered over Italy. Fermi himself fled to America, where his work led to the first nuclear reactor and, eventually, the Manhattan Project. Today, Via Panisperna has returned to its peaceful roots.
It is a place of wine bars, artisan shops, and the smell of roasting garlic. But beneath the charm of the "bread and ham" street lies the memory of a few young men who, in a sun-drenched Roman laboratory, figured out how to split the world apart.
