The story

Hello there, I’m Avsha, and I’m delighted to guide you through one of the most atmospheric corners of Amersfoort. As you stand here in the shadow of the massive Onze Lieve Vrouwetoren, or the Tower of Our Lady, take a deep breath. Locals affectionately call this giant Lange Jan, or Tall John.

Standing at nearly one hundred meters, it is the proud, soaring heart of the city and represents the exact geographical center of the Netherlands. But as impressive as the tower is when you look up, the real secret of this place requires you to look down, right at the stones beneath your feet. As you begin to walk along Lieve Vrouwestraat, notice the patterns in the pavement.

You will see distinct lines of light-colored stones and brass studs embedded in the ground. These aren't just decorative flourishes. They are the blueprints of a ghost.

You are currently walking through the vanished nave of what was once a magnificent Gothic church. For hundreds of years, this street didn't exist as an open road; it was the sacred interior of a house of worship, filled with incense, flickering candles, and the echoes of Gregorian chants. The story of why the church disappeared and left only the tower behind is one of the most dramatic chapters in Dutch history.

By the late 18th century, the church had lost its religious function and was being used by the military as a laboratory and a storehouse for gunpowder. In the year 1787, a devastating explosion rocked the city. The blast was so powerful that it felt like an earthquake, shattering windows miles away and completely leveling the body of the church in a matter of seconds.

When the smoke finally cleared, the citizens were met with a sight that felt like a miracle. The entire church was gone, reduced to a field of rubble, yet the tower stood perfectly intact, rising defiantly from the ruins. The people of Amersfoort decided not to rebuild.

Instead, they cleared the debris, paved the ground, and created the street you are walking on today. As you move further down the street, imagine the sheer scale of the building that once occupied this space. The brass markers show you exactly where the massive pillars once reached toward the sky.

This street is a living memorial to a catastrophe that reshaped the city’s map. It is a place where tragedy and beauty coexist, where a literal explosion of history created the open, vibrant square we enjoy today. Take your time, feel the history humming beneath your soles, and enjoy the unique perspective of walking through the heart of a phantom cathedral.
