This narrow, vertical canyon of stone is named for Ruđer Bošković, Dubrovnik’s favorite son and perhaps one of the most underrated geniuses in human history. Born here in 1711, Bošković was a Jesuit priest, a diplomat, a poet, and an astronomer. But he is best known as a visionary physicist.
Long before the modern age of quantum mechanics, Bošković sat in these very surroundings and theorized that matter was not made of solid, clunky spheres, but of point-like structures surrounded by forces of attraction and repulsion. In essence, he anticipated atomic theory a full century before it became a scientific staple. As you start to climb these steps, look at the buildings pressing in on either side.
The palace that was home to the Bošković family stood in this neighborhood, a place where a young boy looked up at the thin slice of Adriatic sky visible between the rooftops and wondered about the mechanics of the universe. It is a long way from these humble stone steps to the observatories of Milan or the royal courts of Paris and London, where he eventually advised kings and was elected to the Royal Society. Bošković was obsessed with light and optics; he even worked on repairing the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome when it started to crack, using his mathematical prowess to save one of the world's greatest architectural wonders. The climb here is steep, a physical reminder of the rigorous education he received at the nearby Jesuit Collegium.
