Welcome to Mendlovo náměstí, the bustling heart of Old Brno. As you stand here amidst the hum of the blue and yellow trams, look toward the imposing red-brick Basilica of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. This magnificent Gothic structure is the anchor of the Augustinian Abbey of St.
Thomas. While the square outside is a whirl of modern city life, the walls of this abbey hold a secret that changed the course of human history. Step closer toward the abbey’s entrance.
In the mid-1800s, this wasn’t just a monastery; it was one of the most vibrant intellectual hubs in Central Europe. Under the leadership of Abbot Cyril Napp, a man who believed that the pursuit of science was a form of worship, the friars here were teachers, philosophers, and botanists. In 1843, a young man named Johann Mendel arrived at these gates to join the order, taking the name Gregor.
As you walk along the perimeter of the abbey grounds, imagine a modest, narrow strip of garden located just behind the refectory. It was there, in a plot no larger than a standard backyard, that Mendel spent eight years meticulously breeding pea plants. While the rest of the world looked at a field of peas and saw dinner, Mendel saw a mathematical puzzle.
He tracked seven distinct traits—like whether a pea was wrinkled or smooth, or if its flower was purple or white. Picture him in his black friar’s robes, hunched over his plants with a tiny paintbrush, carefully transferring pollen from one blossom to another. He wasn’t just gardening; he was conducting the world’s first rigorous statistical analysis of biology.
Between 1856 and 1863, he cultivated nearly 30,000 plants. He discovered that traits didn't just blend together like paint; they followed specific rules of dominance and recession. He had found the "atoms" of inheritance—what we now call genes.
Ironically, when Mendel presented his findings to the local Natural History Society in 1865, the audience was polite but largely baffled. His work gathered dust in libraries for decades. Mendel eventually became the Abbot of this very monastery, spending his final years focused on administrative duties and meteorology, famously remarking that "my time will come."
He was right. Today, as you look at the modern Mendel Museum on the abbey grounds or the statue of him standing amongst his beloved pea vines, you are standing at the birthplace of genetics.
