The story
As you stand here on the high ground of Grajska planota 1, you are standing upon the very soul of Ljubljana. Look out over the red-tiled roofs and the winding emerald ribbon of the Ljubljanica River below. It is a peaceful view, but according to legend, this land was once the site of a terrifying struggle that birthed the city’s identity.
Long before these medieval stone walls were raised, the area below the hill was a vast, treacherous marsh. Ancient Greek lore tells us that the hero Jason and his band of Argonauts, having successfully stolen the Golden Fleece from King Aeetes, were fleeing across the Danube and up the Sava River. They eventually reached the source of the Ljubljanica.
It was here, in the thick mists of the Ljubljana marshes, that they encountered a monstrous creature: the Great Dragon. This wasn’t just any beast. It was a swamp-dwelling terror that guarded the waters.
Jason, a hero defined by his courage and cunning, engaged the dragon in a fierce battle. The struggle echoed against these very hillsides until, finally, Jason struck the killing blow. While Jason eventually dismantled his ship, the Argo, and carried it across land to the Adriatic Sea, the memory of the dragon remained rooted in the soil.
As you walk through the castle’s inner courtyard or look up at the soaring Outlook Tower, you’ll notice the dragon is everywhere. It is no longer seen as a monster to be feared, but as a guardian. Over the centuries, the image of the dragon moved from the marshes to the hilltop.
By the Middle Ages, when the Habsburgs and the Dukes of Carinthia fortified this rock, the dragon was officially integrated into the city’s coat of arms. It sits atop the castle tower in the city’s heraldry, watching over the citizens just as you are doing now. If you look toward the center of town, you can spot the famous Dragon Bridge with its four copper-green statues.
Locals jokingly say the dragons wag their tails when a virtuous person crosses, but their true purpose is symbolic. They represent the strength, power, and resilience of Ljubljana. The castle itself has transformed many times—from a Roman military outpost to a medieval fortress, and even a 19th-century prison—but the myth of the Argonauts remains its foundation.
