In the 1980s, the lights of night shops here at Kalavasal stayed on until sunrise. That was decades before the flyover. You are standing on the Madurai-Dindigul Bypass Road, a state highway that meets the Madurai-Theni highway just a short walk from here. The Hindu called this one of the busiest junctions in the city.

The four-lane flyover above the intersection is Madurai’s first. It opened on June 8, 2020, and runs for 750 meters. It cost 54.07 crore rupees; buses heading for the southern districts use it, though the roundabout underneath was judged too small for the traffic in its first year. Reports as late as July 2026 note that buses halting at the mouth of the Theni Road still cause traffic snarls at Kalavasal.

The Thangam Grand, by its own account open since 2015, has 66 rooms about 230 meters north-east of the junction. If you follow the Bypass Road about one kilometer north, you reach the Kamarajar Bridge. It crosses the Vaigai river, a semi-perennial waterway that often runs dry during the summer months.

That was Bypass Road at Kalavasal, Madurai, India. Avsha tells a story like this about wherever you are — any street, in your language.
